Expanding opportunities for creators to earn money on Facebook

December 7, 2022

At Facebook, we’re committed to helping creators earn money for crafting original content and cultivating community. We recently announced more ways for creators to earn, and today we’re sharing additional details about these expanded monetization opportunities and improved support for creators on Facebook. We’re also sharing updates on how we’re making it easier for more creators to engage their audience and get paid faster -- and announcing fun ways to spread holiday cheer.

This holiday season, we’re celebrating creators and spreading holiday fun with our latest program: Stars Gifting Season

Seasonal Virtual Gifts: From now until the new year, fans can purchase limited-time seasonal virtual gifts to support their favorite creators and spread holiday cheer.

Stars Party Bonus: From 12/7 to 12/21, Stars creators are eligible to receive bonus Stars if they achieve set goals. Keep an eye out for more details in the Professional Dashboard.

Stars Sale: Stars will be on sale from 12/14 to 1/4. Fans will be able to get an additional 5% to 20% more Stars, depending on the pack they purchase. People can buy Stars at a discount in videos and in the Stars store. The sale will be offered across Live, On Demand, and Reels.

Expanding Stars, and testing new Stars features and formats

We’re making it easier for people to discover Stars on Facebook by automatically enabling Stars on public creator content, including on Facebook Reels. This means that people can learn about and use Stars in more places across Facebook. We’re testing with a select number of creators.

As we expand Stars across the Facebook app, we’re introducing new features and formats to help improve the Stars experience:

More tools to engage with Stars senders: We want to make it easier for creators to engage with their supportive fans. We’re adding a filter in Comments Manager that displays all comments that were sent with Stars. Creators can reply to multiple Stars comments at once. We’re rolling these features out over the next few weeks. Creators will be able to access them in their Professional Dashboard by navigating to the “Sent with Stars” filter in Comments Manager.

New Virtual Gifts: We’re expanding virtual gifts on Facebook Reels, and testing a new set of content-tailored virtual gifts so that fans have more ways to show appreciation for a creator’s content. We’ll test themed gifts across several Reels topics to start, including pets, cars, fashion and dance.

Stars on Reels Freebies: We’re testing a new program, Stars on Reels Freebies, that gives some fans free Stars to send on eligible creators’ Facebook Reels. By creating more Reels, content creators can increase their likelihood of receiving Stars. We’re testing this program with a select number of creators globally.

With the volume of comments coming in 24/7, Comments Manager is a great tool for delivering a positive experience for our audience because it provides a way to keep the most relevant fans and followers from getting lost in the mix.

Getting creators to their first payout sooner

We’re lowering the threshold for U.S.-based creators to get paid from $100 to $25. This will help small, earlier-stage creators get paid sooner. The new payout threshold will apply to Stars and Facebook Subscriptions, and will be available for additional Facebook monetization products in the coming weeks.

Staying committed to providing creators with monetization tools that fit their needs

Ads on Facebook Reels: We continue to test Ads on Facebook Reels with select creators globally. Testing includes two formats: Overlay ads and Post Loop ads. Overlay ads are placed directly on top of a Reel as a banner or sticker at the start of your reel. Post Loop ads are video ads that are shown after a Reel has looped. Once the ad finishes, the same Reel continues and loops again for viewers to enjoy.

Subscriptions: For Facebook Subscriptions, we’re adding new, easier ways for creators to promote themselves. On Facebook Watch, we’ve introduced a “Subscribe” button, so that followers can become subscribers while enjoying their favorite creator’s video content.

Providing more support for creators

We’ve included new updates to our in-app Creator Support Hub, available on eligible Pages and Professional Mode profiles in the US, to tackle some commonly asked monetization questions with an expanded set of self-help articles and in-app education on earning payout dates. We’re also expanding access to live chat agent support to eligible creators on Pages and Professional Mode in the US with 10,000 or more followers, connecting creators with live support to help resolve their monetization issues.
